Index demokracie
Britský týdeník The Economist hodnotil téměř všechny země světa (s výjimkou nejmenších států) na základě 5 kritérií: volební proces a pluralita, občanské svobody, fungování vlády, politická spoluúčast a politická kultura. Maximální možné skóre, kterého bylo možno dosáhnout, bylo 10, minimální skóre bylo 0. Za úplné demokracie jsou pak považovány země se známkou 8-10, „demokracie s vadami“ (flawed demokracy) jsou země se známkami 6-7.9. Hybridní režimy mají známku 4-5.9 a autoritativní režimy mají známku nižší než 4. První tři kategorie pak The Economist označuje jako demokratické, kdežto teprve čtvrtá kategorie jsou vyložené diktatury. Každé srovnání může být samozřejmě diskutabilní. Švédsko je podle tohoto pořadí téměř dokonalou demokracií. Česká republika se umístila na lichotivém 19. místě a je „plně demokratickou“ zemí (dokonce demokratičtější než Spojené království, mateřská země týdeníku The Economist, čemuž se skoro ani nechce věřit). Česká republika je nejdemokratičtější postkomunistickou zemí vůbec! Naopak Slovensko je až 44. a mezi úplné demokracie se neřadí. Z postkomunistických zemí se tak mezi „úplné demokracie“ řadí pouze Česká republika a Slovinsko. Takže i když je nadávání na politiku u nás národním sportem, nejsme na tom zase tak špatně…
